If you've had a positive experience in one of your units or courses and would like to let us know, we'd love to hear about that and you might like to consider nominating your tutor, lecturer or unit coordinator for a Teaching Merit Certificate. The nomination form is available here and nominations are usually called for in May and September of each year.

You must complete and sign an assignment cover sheet for each assessment task. Assignments that are submitted without a signed cover sheet will not be marked. You can download an assignment cover sheet from the link below or pick up a copy from the School office. Instructions for how to submit your assignment are in your unit outline.

Please note that, subject to enrolment numbers and other factors, the timetable may be adjusted following its initial publication. You should confirm your timetable prior to attending your first class and cross-reference the online timetable information with the information provided in your unit outline. For example, this will indicate whether or not you are required to attend each timetabled class or if you need to be allocated to a particular tutorial group.

Tutorial allocation is handled differently by different units and Schools. In general, information about how tutorials will be allocated is given in the first class of each semester. If you have missed this first class you should contact your unit coordinator (see your unit outline for this information) as soon as possible

Outside of class times you should restrict your enquiries to staff consultation times (unless your tutor, lecturer or unit coordinator has indicated otherwise). If you are not able to visit during the identified times, please contact the staff member in question to make an appointment.

Each assessment task in your unit is marked against the assessment criteria that are stated in your unit outline. These assessment criteria are applied equally across the unit and sometimes, across a group of related units.

Before taking steps to request a remark or a review of assessment you should carefully consider your work against the assessment criteria and take note of any feedback that has been given.

Keep in mind that a lower than hoped for mark is not a reflection of your general intelligence or your skills in any other area of your life, it is a reflection of the piece of assessment that you submitted and the progress against the unit's objectives that you have demonstrated.

Remember that your University degree is a learning experience and that part of our role is to extend your existing knowledge and skills into new areas that will take some time and practice to master.

If, after reflection, you still don't understand your result or you believe that there has been an error, either for an individual assessment task or the overall unit, please refer to the following checklist for the steps that you should take.

1. Contact your tutor to discuss your result. Sometimes, once you have some more information about why you received the result and what steps you can take in the future to achieve a higher result, you may be able to see why your result is an appropriate one.
   
2. Contact the unit coordinator to discuss your result. If the person who marked your assignment and the unit coordinator are not the same person, your next step is to contact the unit coordinator. Again, they may be able to put your result into perspective or provide you with some additional information that will explain your result.
   
3. Contact the unit coordinator to request a remark of an assignment. To request a remark of an assignment you should contact the unit coordinator within 5 week days(ie Mon - Fri) of receiving your result. A longer time frame may be allowed if you can demonstrate that you have been delayed in making the request because you have been working through steps 1 and 2 of this checklist. You should request the remark in writing and submit that request with both your original, marked assignment and an identical clean copy to the School office.
   
4. Contact the Head of School. If a remark is not possible (Eg Because the assessment in question was not a written assignment) you should write to the Head of School outlining your concerns abour your result and what steps you have taken so far to try to clarify your result. You don't need to write anything lengthy, just include the key points and why you believe your result is incorrect or unfair. The Head of School will review your assessment (including checking that results have been calculated correctly) and let you know the outcome as soon as possible. Because the Head of School will, from time to time, be away from campus you may wish to submit this request via the School office.
   
5. Request a Review of Assessment. A Review of Assessment can be requested within 10 working days of receiving your final result for the unit. This is a relatively formal process and requires completion of a form and payment of a fee. More information and the form is available here (PDF 373KB).
   
6. Appeals and complaints. In most cases, the above steps have clarified or resolved issues to the student's satisfaction. However, there arestill a number of steps that can be taken beyond this and the University is committed to ensuring that any concerns and problems that are put forward will be treated seriously, fairly and resolved as quickly as possible.
