UTAS Home › Faculty of Arts › English, Journalism & European Languages › Thinking of Studying in our School?
Under the banners of its three major disciplines— English; Journalism, Media and Communications; and European Languages—the School offers a wide range of courses and units in the areas of English literature, creative writing, news, media studies, communications, French, and German.
Studying units in any of these disciplinary areas is both stimulating and fun. You will have the opportunity to find out what Shakespeare can tell us about his own time, and how he can help us to understand our own world. You will be able to study texts from the literary canon, and to hone your creative writing skills. You will be able to learn how to analyse news media and to write your own news stories. You will have the opportunity to develop broadcast skills in our well-equipped Media Lab, and to work under the supervision of a qualified professional in a media industry placement. You can learn to speak French or German, and find out about the cultures where those languages are spoken. And whatever subjects you choose, we can offer you flexible ways of learning and the opportunity to complete some of your study overseas.
Our units can be studied in many undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and qualifications, including: Associate Degree in Arts; Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Arts (Honours); Diploma in Languages; Graduate Certificate; Graduate Diploma; and Masters of Arts (Coursework). We also offer two higher degrees by research in all disciplinary areas: Master of Arts (MA); and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The Academic staff in the School are well-qualified and bring to UTAS a wealth of experience from having previously studied or worked in a variety of Australian universities, and in universities in Canada, England, France, Japan, New Zealand, and Wales.
Many of the staff you will meet in lectures and tutorials have won University awards for the high quality of their teaching. Staff in the School are regularly nominated by their students for Teaching Merit Certificates, and both Anna Johnston and Lisa Fletcher have received UTAS Awards for Teaching Excellence.
SEJEL also prides itself on providing a supportive research environment for both its staff and its research students. Many of the staff who will teach you are nationally or internationally known scholars in their fields of research, and look forward to sharing their expertise with you in the classroom.
