Postgraduate coursework programs
Students wishing to undertake postgraduate coursework study in English at the University of Tasmania can enrol in the following programs:
R5W Graduate Certificate in Arts (English)
One semester full-time (or, up to 2 consecutive years part-time), 50% load, usually comprising 2 level 300 units and 2 level 400 units.
R6W Graduate Diploma in Arts (English)
One year full-time (or, up to 4 consecutive years part-time), 100% load, usually comprising 2 level 300 units and 6 level 400 units (i.e. a further 4 units after completion of the Graduate Certificate).
R7W Master of Arts (English)
1.5 years full-time (or, up to 6 consecutive years part-time), 150% load, comprising the coursework completed for the Grad Cert and Grad Dip (100%), plus a 12,000-15,000 word research project taken over the course of one semester full-time or two semesters part-time.
Students who enrol in a Masters and terminate their study after completing 100% of coursework units may graduate with a Graduate Diploma, or may graduate with a Graduate Certificate on completion of 50% of required units. Conversely a student who commences in a Graduate Certificate and completes 50% of required units may elect to complete a further 50% of required units in order to graduate with a GradDip, or may elect to complete a further 100% of required units (including a 50% research project) in order to graduate with a Masters.
Students who complete R7W the Master of Arts (English) at a sufficiently high level and who show an affinity for research will be encouraged to consider progression to a research higher degree. The postgraduate coursework program can thus provide an alternative pathway to a research higher degree in English.
