The Collection includes works by Robert Rooney, Fiona Hall, and Tracey Moffatt, and many artists-in-residence such as John Wolseley, Andrew Spiers and John Neeson have donated works which are displayed around the University.
The Collection also holds works by fine Tasmanian and overseas artists who studied at the Tasmanian School of Art, including Anne Morrison, David Keeling and Philip Wolfhagen. In addition, past and present staff are represented in the Collection.
Among many portraits are two by Jack Carington Smith – one of Lucien Dechaineaux, a former head of the Tasmanian Art School, and his own self-portrait. The Collection also holds work by Rosamond McCulloch, whose bequest enabled the Tasmanian School of Art to acquire a residential artist studio in Paris.
On all three campuses regular exhibitions are a feature of our community outreach program. Works from the Collection are exhibited in UTAS galleries - Hobart’s Plimsoll Gallery, the Academy Gallery in Launceston, and the Atrium Gallery at the Cradle Coast. An exhibition of over 70 artworks purchased through the bequest of Marion E. Wharmby was a recent highlight at the Plimsoll Gallery. This included works by Elizabeth Gower, Hossein Valamanesh, Ian Abdulla, and Sally Smart. The Gallery has also exhibited works by Christopher Le Brun, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Victor Pasmore, which were part of a generous donation of fifty 20th century prints from Dr. Douglas Kagi through the Cultural Gifts Program.
