GMO Picture Genetically Modified Crops: The science, technology and marketing implications

Tasmania’s moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture will expire in November. To help us understand the current state of GMO technology, law and policy, the Institute for the Study of Social Change in partnership with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture is hosting a public forum with three speakers followed by a panel discussion.

About the Speakers

  • Professor Jennifer Thomson - Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Cape Town and the author of GM Crops: The Impact and the Potential and Food for Africa: The life and work of a scientist in GM crops (CSIRO Publishing).
  • Jan Davis - Tagged as Tasmania’s top political lobbyist, Jan trained as an economist and is currently CEO of Protected Cropping Australia and a member of the Agricultural Consultative Committee to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
  • Pip Dawson - CEO of Fermentasmania and formerly with Austrade, where she held the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Head of Trade, responsible for trade promotion strategies to connect export-ready Australian businesses to overseas opportunities.
  • Facilitated by Fred Gale - Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations, University of Tasmania, and an affiliate of the Institute for the Study of Social Change.

Refreshments from 5.30pm.
