Genetically Modified Crops: The science, law and politics

Tasmania’s moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture will expire in November. To help us understand the current state of GMO technology, law and policy, the Institute for the Study of Social Change in partnership with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture is hosting a public forum with three speakers followed by a panel discussion.

About the Speakers

• Professor Jennifer Thomson - Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Cape Town and the author of GM Crops: The Impact and the Potential and Food for Africa: The life and work of a scientist in GM crops (CSIRO Publishing).
• Professor Di Nicol - Director of the Centre for Law and Genetics at the University of Tasmania. Di’s teaching and research focuses on the interface between technology and the law and the challenge of regulating emerging biological technologies.
• Dr Fern Wickson - Senior Advisor at the Centre for Biosafety in Tromsø, Norway, and former member of the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board. Fern’s expertise is in environmental ethics, the politics of risk and uncertainty, and the governance of emerging technologies.
• Moderated by Sally Dakis, former ABC Rural Correspondent.
