Leading analysts say Australian foreign policy has never had to deal with a world like today's. The prominent American analyst Kori Schake goes further, arguing that unless pressure on the international order begins to abate, this period of history may become known as ‘the interwar years’.

In this context, how can Australia best defend and promote its interests and values as a democratic middle power in the Indo-Pacific?

This event is a panel discussion with:

  • Michael Shoebridge, Director of Defence & Strategy, Australian Strategic Policy Institute
  • Professor James Chin, Director, Asia Institute Tasmania
  • Geoff Heriot, Researcher, University of Tasmania, former ABC corporate/editorial executive and foreign correspondent

The discussion will be chaired by Dr Matt Killingsworth, Senior Lecturer in International Relations in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania.

The impetus for this AIIA discussion, in association with the Asia Institute Tasmania, arose from publication of the ASPI report, Hard news and free media as the sharp edge of Australian soft power, to which Michael Shoebridge and Geoff Heriot contributed.

Presented by the Australian Institute of International Affairs, the University of Tasmania and the Asia Institute Tasmania.

Refreshments from 5.30pm.
