School of Philosophy Cafe
Philosophy Café
On the first Tuesday of every Month Royal Oak Hotel Launceston November 3rd 2009 Autonomy: How much do we have? How much should we have?
Themes and questions to explore… How autonomous are we? How autonomous should we be? Is autonomy necessarily always a good thing? What, if any, are the reasonable limits to autonomy? Some limitation of autonomy is sanctioned by society (e.g., imprisonment of criminals). So autonomy is obviously not an inalienable right, so what is the trade off here? Is imprisonment only justified in terms of the protection of other people’s autonomy (e.g., Mill’s harm principle)?

Reflections on Trends and Emerging Issues in Outdoor Experiential Education in Canada & Beyond
6th November 2009 Time: 3.10-4pm Outdoor Education Research Faculty of Education presents: Dr Tim O’Connell (Brock University) Tim is engaged in a number of local, regional and international projects which examine how psychological sense of community develops in groups of people who participate in outdoor recreation and outdoor education activities.
Experiential education in Canada, particularly in the outdoors, has a long tradition and is rooted in the historical fabric of the country. Recent curricular developments have thrust outdoor experiential education into the spotlight in the province of Ontario. As recommended by a blue ribbon panel led by Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar, outdoor experiential education, in the form of environmental education, has been reintroduced to the kindergarten through grade 12 curriculum. This case will be used to explore the historical background of outdoor experiential education in Canada, and contextualize global trends and emerging issues in the broader field of experiential education. Faculty of Education video conference rooms (Cradle Coast B159, Launceston A221c & Hobart H325)

visual and Performing Arts
Theatre Performance: Seneca's Oedipus - Work in progress
Performed by Voice Theatre Lab, this is an original raw visceral interpretation of seneca's Oedipus - the story of a king who killed his father and married his mother. This version (compared with Sophocles') was meant to be recited rather than performed, and so combines vocal sounds, physical theatre, vocal and physical expression of abstract imagery. It aims to highlight the themes of light and darkness, sight and blindness, the power of unwritten law and the limits of free will through the power of the hiuman voice in crisis. Venue: Annexe Studio Inveresk. Cost: Adults $20, Students, Concession, UTAs staff $5. Bookings ph. 03 6324 4450 or get tickets before the show.
