University Department of Rural Health Seminar
Using Research to Shape Health Policy
Time: 12:15 (for 12:30) - 1.30pm Venue: DHHS Telehealth video conferencing theatres statewide Presenter: Dr Erica Bell, A/Co-Director/Deputy Director, University Department of Rural Health, University of Tasmania
Many of us in health want to influence and ideally change health policy. Whether we are consumer advocates, health practitioners, staff of professional associations, health services administrators, government department workers, or university researchers, we are asking “How can we deliver evidence that shapes health policy?”
This seminar aims to equip the audience with an overview of the “hands on” knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to deliver research for health policy, in the government, not-for-profit, and private sectors. It focuses on describing research for health policy in an accessible and practical way using “real world” case studies. Colourful quotations from interviews with health policy CEOs in 11 countries are also included.
The workshop aims to help the audience to develop an understanding of the blend of strategic people skills, methodological inventiveness, research entrepreneurship, creative design, and policy writing know-how that is critical to delivering useful research evidence for health policy.

Free Public Lecture
Women in Physics – free public lecture
Thursday 13 August 8pm
Physics Theatre 1, UTAS, Sandy Bay “To planets or just to the shops, Plasmas pave the path” Associate Professor Christine Charles, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, ANU Plasmas have existed since the very first moments of the Universe. It is the stuff of stars. It fills the space between stars. It gives us the beautiful northern and southern aurorae. Our houses have plasma TV displays, plasma lights (fluorescent tubes). Everywhere we look, there is plasma. But we stand on solid earth and the solid state accounts for less than one percent of the total mass of the Universe. The rest is plasma, a hot ionised gas containing positive and negative charges (except, perhaps, for dark matter). By properly harnessing the plasma state we can make microchips for computers, we can make plasma engines (thrusters) to get to the planets and we can make fuel cells to take people just down to the shops. The discovery in Australia of a current-free electric double layer (a cliff of potential like a river waterfall which energises charged particles falling through it) in a laboratory plasma is the basis of a new space engine: the Australian Helicon Double Layer Thruster. The Australian Institute of Physics’ International Women in Physics Lecture Series was instituted to celebrate the significant contribution of women to advances in physics. The Lecture will interest a non-specialist physics audience and will increase awareness among students and their families of the wide possibilities offered by studying physics. The School of Mathematics and Physics is co-organising the lecture. Further information: Australian Institute of Physics (Tas)

BIOGRAPHY: Andrew Legg formed the Southern Gospel Choir and Band in 2000, soon after joining the staff of the contemporary music department at the University of Tasmania, Conservatorium of Music. The choir is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant and exciting musical ensembles to arrive on the Tasmanian music scene in recent times. Now in their eighth year they hold a special place in the musical life of Tasmanians, performing to packed houses and critical acclaim.
The Southern Gospel Choir is unique in Australia. Their very contemporary sound draws on the grooves and harmonic structures of jazz, funk, soul, house and hip-hop and yet maintains the heart and soul of traditional gospel through beautiful and powerful melodies and vocal arrangements, and the irrepressible, uncontainable joy that is gospel music.
The Southern Gospel Choir came to prominence in 2001 through their highly successful performances at the Hobart Summer Festival. In 2003 they were featured artists for the Choral Island event at Port Arthur during the 10 Days on the Island Festival. That year they also played to 1200 people as part of the Burnie Shines Festival. In 2004 they performed two sell-out concerts in Hobart, one of which was along with the internationally renowned vocal quartet, The Idea of North. More recently, the SGC were invited to record a song for the MYER Spirit of Christmas album along side Australian music industry icons Guy Sebastian and Delta Goodrem.
The choir is highly experienced in performance for corporate events, having performed at numerous functions and conventions and this powerful choir are at home singing in outdoor venues, wineries, the Federation Concert Hall, the Theatre Royal or community halls and theatres. The Southern Gospel Choir is one of the most flexible music ensembles in Australia, able to provide a stylish sextet or a huge, roof-raising gospel sound, and boasts some of the best up-and-coming contemporary singers in Australia.
The choir’s membership is open to the public as well as Conservatorium students, and includes men and women aged from 14 to 60. It began with seventy singers, and eight years later has over 120 singers, including a forty-five member ‘frontline’ choir.
The choir is supported by a six-piece band drawn from the elite of Tasmania’s musicians, featuring saxophone, drums, bass, piano, keyboards and the inimitable sound of the Hammond organ. The choir can also be ably supported by the brilliant solo piano accompaniment of Andrew Legg.
The Southern Gospel Choir are unique in Australia, and in March 2005 released their groundbreaking CD, Great Day. Stunningly recorded by multi ARIA award winning musicians and producers Llew Kiek and Guy Dickerson, it truly captures the essence of this outstanding and powerful ensemble. As a result of this stunning debut, Great Day was nominated for an ARIA, World Music category, in 2005, giving serious national industry and peer credence to what Tasmanian’s already know is a life changing experience and a truly international musical ensemble.
Sales for the album have already exceeded the wildest expectations and an international distribution is just around the corner and now this amazing ensemble is absolutely ready to spread its wings and take its message right around the world.
