The CODES International Education Fund provides education and training in the fields of geoscience and ore deposit research.
The fund will ensure that CODES continues to provide crucial education, training and technology transfer services to the minerals industry after Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence funding ceases in December 2013.
It will also enable a substantial expansion of these services, providing a range of key benefits for investors.
At the operational level - The key player in delivering the training and technology transfer benefits for the investment partners is CODES.
CODES is the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits, based alongside the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Formed in 1989, the Centre has grown substantially over the years and is now widely regarded as a global leader in ore deposit research, particularly in relation to the formation of copper, gold, zinc, lead and silver deposits. It is home to 40 highly qualified research scientists and 85 postgraduate students, further cementing its position as the largest university-based team of ore deposit researchers in the world. The Centre has developed an integrated, ore-systems based research model that encompasses an array of disciplines, from district architecture, greenfields exploration models, ore genesis and ore characterisation, through to mineral processing and environmental geoscience.
The Centre has also built an international reputation for excellence in postgraduate training. For many years, it has been a source of first-class geoscientists to industry, many of whom are now holding senior positions at major companies around the world.
Administration matters are handled by the UTAS Foundation, which has a long and venerable record in raising funds on behalf of the University, and establishing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with companies that provide support.
The Foundation was established in 1994 under the Associations Incorporation Act 1964 and operates under a formal deed of trust with a board of governors. It is managed by directors, who are all prominent community and business leaders who volunteer their time and expertise. It currently manages over $33 million in funds. The International Education Fund is a sub-trust of the Foundation, which enables it to be tax exempt.
