I grew up in Queensland where I studied a Bachelor of Environmental Management (Tropical Forestry) through the University of Queensland. I gained a range of work experience throughout the course of my studies. From August of 2004 I spent a year as a Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD, a program of AusAID) in Leyte, Philippines, working on a tree farmer project. During my placement I assisted with a number of activities including helping with the development of an extension primer of tree registration policy. I found the AYAD experience really rewarding and thoroughly recommend it to others. When I returned to Australia in 2005 I finished the final year of my degree and incorporated some of what I was working on in the Philippines into a final-year research project. I graduated at the end of 2006
Although I was tempted to start my PhD studies straight after my degree, I decided to start work in the plantation industry, which has provided me with valuable experience. I moved to Albany, Western Australia in January 2007 to start work as a tree farm supervisor with Timbercorp. I finished work in the plantations in 2009 and moved to Hobart, Tasmania to start my research. I have since relocated back to Western Australia to complete my studies externally. My passion is to contribute to sustainable forest management outcomes and to promote good communication between plantation companies and the community.
