The School hosts about 70 honours and postgraduate students each year. Academic staff and postgraduate students are each associated with one of our Research Areas
Our Honours program is always seeking enthusiastic students whom we aim to develop into high achieving researchers. Many of our Honours graduates go on to a PhD, while others find employment in Local, State and Federal Government agencies, CSIRO or in teaching and policy areas. An Honours degree is also a prerequisite for higher degree studies.
The Honours course is a one-year program in which you carry out a 10-month independent research project, under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. The project is principally examined by thesis, and in many cases the student's work is later written up as publications in scientific journals.
If you already have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area and a good academic record or relevant work experience then starting a research project as part of the Honours Program is available to you.
Potential supervisors in the School of Geography and Environmental Studies have expertise in biogeography, geomorphology and climatology; environmental planning and management; cultural and political geography; and spatial science, including geographical information systems, remote sensing, geodesy and photogrammetry.
The School is equipped to support field and laboratory research. It has access to vehicles and necessary technical equipment. We have dedicated environmental and computing laboratories within the School and have ready access to the state of the art facilities of the Central Science Laboratory.
The School offers a number of scholarships to suitable students commencing honours study. Students are eligible to apply for a number of other scholarships also. The Tasmania Scholarships program runs on a calendar year basis. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close on 31 October in the year prior.
For more information on these scholarships and others, refer to UTAS Scholarships and Bursaries. Individual supervisory staff may also have access to supporting funds, usually tied to a particular project area.
