Make a Bequest

Every bequest, large or small, makes a lasting impact.

Leaving a gift in your Will, or a bequest, to the University of Tasmania is a significant way to make an enduring contribution to the community. Your help can develop study and research in an area which is important to you. Your generosity will make students' lives easier and help advance Tasmania.

There are several options to consider when making a bequest including: a gift of money; property; land; shares; artwork or other item of value; or a residual bequest.

The University of Tasmania recommends you seek legal advice when drafting your Will and considering the below examples.

A residual bequest

A residual bequest is the remainder of your estate after family and friends have been provided for and expenses in finalising your estate have been met. A residual bequest is a popular choice because it maintains the relative value of your gift in comparison to the value received by the other beneficiaries under your Will. It also automatically adjusts to changes in the value of your estate.

General Bequests

Your General Bequests are especially valuable to the University as they allow the University to prioritise the use of funds to support its important causes and objectives. An example of a General Bequest is:

I give to the University of Tasmania (ABN 30 764 374 782) the sum of $[x] or [x]% of my residual estate to support its priorities. The receipt of an authorised officer of the University of Tasmania for the time being is sufficient discharge to my executor of this gift.

Specific Bequests

Specific Bequests may include a wish as to how your gift is directed within the University, for example, to provide scholarships to disadvantaged students or to support a particular initiative or school. An example of a Specific Bequest is:

I give to the University of Tasmania (ABN 30 764 374 782) the sum of $[x] or [x]% of my residual estate. It is my wish, without creating a binding trust, that the gift to the University of Tasmania is used for the purpose of [insert specific purpose, for example, scholarships] or for any similar purpose that is within the spirit of that wish as determined by the Council of the University of Tasmania. The receipt of an authorised officer of the University of Tasmania for the time being is sufficient discharge to my executor of this gift.
