Lloyd Robson Memorial Fund (Rule 8)
The Council of the University of Tasmania in pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred on it by the University of Tasmania Act 1992 hereby makes the following Rule:
Whereas Mrs R Kiss Robson has donated a sum of $25,000 to the University for the purpose of perpetuating the memory of the late Dr Lloyd Robson and marking his substantial contribution to the history of Tasmania; and whereas she has requested that that sum be used for the purpose of providing travel grants for postgraduate students, particularly those working in the field of Tasmanian history; and whereas the University has accepted the said sum on the terms set forth in these Rules; it is hereby provided as follows:
Rules:
- The fund, together with any accumulations of income from time to time added thereto, shall form the Lloyd Robson Memorial Fund.
- Interest from the Fund shall be used to assist postgraduate students in meeting the cost of research travel
- Those eligible for grants from the Fund shall be students enrolled for a masters degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in the field of History.
- Applications shall be invited annually, both in the University at Hobart and the University at Launceston.
- Awards will be made by the Head of the School of History and Classics
- A recipient of a travel grant is eligible for a grant in a subsequent year or years, but preference shall be given to those who have not previously been awarded a grant.
- In making awards consideration shall be given to the following factors:
- the academic merits of the candidate’s travel proposal.
- other means of financial support available to the applicant.
- the proposed field of research, having in mind the donor preference to support research into Tasmanian history.
- In any presentation or publication arising from their research, successful applicants shall give due acknowledgment to the Lloyd Robson Memorial Fund.
- The Head of the School of History and Classics shall determine arrangements for advertising and making the awards, including application procedures and the value of awards.
- Grants in any one year may be shared among two or more deserving candidates, and awards may be withheld in a year in which no candidate is considered of sufficient merit.
