Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries (Rule 57)

 

The University of Tasmania has introduced a program of Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries to help to improve access and participation in higher education of Tasmanian students who face economic or social disadvantage.  These rules apply to the Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries:

Rules
  1. Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries will be awarded to students enrolled at the University of Tasmania who demonstrate economic or social disadvantage.  Priority will be given to students within one or more of the following equity target areas for which the University is seeking to increase access and participation.  These are:
    1. students from a rural or isolated background 
    2. students from a low socio-economic background
    3. students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background
    4. women in non-traditional areas of study 
    5. students with a disability which impacts on their ability to study 
    6. students from a non English speaking background  
  2. Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries will be available to students commencing a course at the University of Tasmania or to students already enrolled in a course at the University of Tasmania. 
  3. Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries will be awarded by a selection committee comprising
    1. the Chair of Academic Senate or nomin
    2. the Academic Registrar or nominee, and
    3. and the Manager of Student Services or nominee
  4. In making its decision, the selection committee may consider a range of criteria including:
    1. the nature and level of a student’s economic, social or other disadvantage
    2. the need for a student to live away from home to complete a selected course
    3. the demonstrated academic capacity or potential of a student and the likelihood of that student completing the course
    4. the availability of other forms of financial support for a student
    5. the absence of a tradition of participation in higher education in a student’s family
  5. Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries will be available for one year and will normally be for full-time study, but at the discretion of the selection committee, a student may be permitted to receive a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary while studying part–time.
  6. A student receiving a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary in one year may be awarded a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary in a subsequent year.  However, a student may not normally be awarded a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary for more than two years in total.
  7. The selection committee may terminate or suspend a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary if it considers the performance of a student merits that action.  If a Tasmania Accommodation Bursary it is suspended, the selection committee may lift the suspension at any time if it considers the student’s performance has become satisfactory. 
  8. All other matters concerning the Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries, their value, advertising and application procedures, and the number offered will be determined by the Scholarships Management Committee.
  9. The Scholarships Management Committee will report annually to Academic Senate and Council on offers made while respecting the need for maintaining confidentiality about students receiving these Tasmania Accommodation Bursaries
