The Beryl Bennett Bursary (Rule 18)

Beryl Bennett Bursary in Agricultural Science

Rule No. 18

Miss Beryl MH Bennett of Leichardt, Launceston, on her death in 1963 bequeathed $16,000 to be held on trust by the Equity Trustees Company of Tasmania Limited, to provide bursaries for graduates or undergraduates of the School of Agricultural Science in the University. Miss Bennett provided that the terms and conditions of the bursaries were to be determined by the Equity Trustees Company of Tasmania Limited, after consultation with the School of Agricultural Science. The Council agreed to the foundation of a bursary on the terms set out in the original rules, which, together with the amendments contained in these revised rules, have been approved by the Public Trustee, who are the successors in title of the Equity Trustees Company of Tasmania Limited.

Rules
  1. The Beryl Bennett Bursary continues in existence.
  2. The bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture) or Bachelor of Applied Science (Horticulture) at the University and may be awarded either to a student commencing study in that degree course or to a student who has already completed successfully one or more years in that course.
  3. The bursary will be awarded by a selection committee comprising the Head of the School of Agricultural Science, the Dean of Science and Engineering or nominee, and the Academic Registrar
  4. The committee must take into account the financial means as well as the academic qualifications of candidates in considering applications for the bursary.
  5. The bursary is tenable for the duration of the degree course, provided that the student’s progress in each year is considered by the selection committee to be satisfactory.
  6. If in any year the selection committee considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate the bursary or suspend it for one year. If the bursary is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action
  7. The detailed selection criteria will be set by the selection committee, having regard to the terms of the bequest.
  8. All other matters concerning the bursary, including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment will be determined by the selection committee, in conjunction with Tasmanian Trustees Limited where appropriate.
  9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate and to Council on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the bursary.
