The Hedley Lux Gregg Bursary in Agricultural Science (Rule 19)

Mr Hedley Lux Gregg, of Campania, on his death in 1985, bequeathed $32,665 to be held on trust by the Perpetual Trustees and National Executors of Tasmania Limited, to provide bursaries, payments or other financial assistance to students deserving of assistance in the School of Agricultural Science in the University. Mr Gregg provided that the Council of the University, on the recommendation of the School of Agricultural Science, may make rules for the distribution of, and eligibility for grants or payments from, the income from that trust. The Council agreed to the foundation of a bursary on the terms set out in the original rules, which are now replaced with these rules on the recommendation of the School of Agricultural Science.

Rules
  1. The Hedley Lux Gregg Bursary continues in existence.
  2. The bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture) or Bachelor of Applied Science (Horticulture) at the University and may be awarded either to a student commencing study in that degree course or to a student who has already completed successfully one or more years in that course
  3. The bursary will be awarded by a selection committee comprising the Head of the School of Agricultural Science, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology or nominee, and one member nominated by and from the members of the School of Agricultural Science.
  4. The committee must take into account the financial means as well as the academic qualifications of candidates in considering applications for the bursar
  5. The bursary is tenable for the duration of the degree course, provided that the student’s progress in each year is considered by the selection committee to be satisfactory.
  6. If in any year the selection committee considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate the bursary or suspend it for one year. If the bursary is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
  7. The detailed selection criteria shall be set by the selection committee, having regard to the terms of the bequest.
  8. All other matters concerning the bursary, including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment will be determined by the selection committee.
  9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate and to Council on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the bursary.
