The John Howlett Bursary in Psychiatric Nursing (Rule 64)
John Howlett suffered brain trauma in 1969 as a result of being knocked down by a motor vehicle while crossing at a pedestrian crossing in NSW. The accident has necessitated him receiving extended care for over three decades from interstate and Tasmanian mental health services. To demonstrate his gratitude for the care he has received from medical staff, his estate has agreed to fund two annual bursaries at the University of Tasmania to support nursing students while they undertake graduate studies in the area of mental health and psychiatric nursing. These rules apply to the bursary:
Rules
- The bursary will be known as “The John Howlett Bursary in Psychiatric Nursing”.
- The bursary will be awarded annually to a student undertaking the Mental Health/Psychiatric Units in the Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate in Nursing courses.
- The bursary will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- The Head of the Tasmanian School of Nursing or nomine
- The Coordinator of the Graduate Diploma of Nursing course
- The bursary will be awarded to a student who is deserving of financial assistance and is undertaking the Mental Health/Psychiatric units in the Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate of Nursing
- The selection committee will determine all matters concerning the bursary, including advertising, application procedures and method and time of payment
- The value of each bursary will be $500, or any other sum determined by the Administrator of the estate of Mr John Howlett from time to time.
- The selection committee will report annually to the Scholarships Management Committee on offers made.
