The John Howlett Bursary in Psychiatry (Rule 63)

 

John Howlett suffered brain trauma in 1969 as a result of being knocked down by a motor vehicle while crossing at a pedestrian crossing in NSW. The accident has necessitated him receiving extended care for over three decades from interstate and Tasmanian mental health services. To demonstrate his gratitude for the care he has received from medical staff, his estate has agreed to fund two annual bursaries at the University of Tasmania to medical students while the psychiatric rotation in the clinical years of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course. These rules apply to the bursary:

Rules
  1. The bursary will be known as “The John Howlett Bursary in Psychiatry”.
  2. The bursary will be awarded annually to a student undertaking the Psychiatry elective in the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery course.
  3. The bursary will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    1. The Dean of the Faculty of Health Science or nominee
    2. The Chair of the Prizes and Scholarships Committee in the School of Medicine
    3. The Associate Head of Student Affairs  

  4. The selection committee will set the selection criteria for the bursary as well as advertising, and application procedures
  5. A student already in receipt of another substantial scholarship or bursary provided by the University of Tasmania will be ineligible to receive the award in that year.
  6. The value of each bursary will be $500, or any other sum determined by the Administrator of the estate of Mr John Howlett from time to time.
  7. The selection committee will report annually to the Scholarships Management Committee on offers made.
