Lewis & Sons Bursary in Agricultural Science (Rule 51)
E Lewis and Sons was a successful rural supplies store in Wynyard in the North-West of Tasmania and was run by the Lewis family for 60 years until sold to Webster Ltd. On retirement from the business, Mr Dick Lewis determined that he would provide funds to the University of Tasmania to support deserving students from the locality of Wynyard to overcome some of the financial restraints to enrolling at the University in order to pursue study in the agricultural sciences.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to establish an endowed bursary in the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- An amount of $20,000 along with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a bursary to be called the “Lewis & Sons Bursary in Agricultural Science”.
- The Bursary is to be awarded to a deserving student who is eligible to commence an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science.
- The bursary will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- the Head of the School of Agricultural Science or a nominee
- the course co-ordinator for the discipline of Agricultural Science;
- Mr Tom Lewis, son of Mr Dick Lewis, or his nominee, (while he or his nominee wishes to be involved);
- after the end of the involvement of Mr Tom Lewis or his nominee, another member of full-time academic staff elected by full-time academic staff of the School of Agricultural Science
- Only students from the North-West region of Tasmania are eligible for the bursary. In making an award, however, the selection committee will give priority to deserving students whose home residence is in the Wynyard locality
- The bursary is tenable for up to three years but this may be extended at the discretion of the selection committee.
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment.
- If the selection committee considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate the bursary or suspend it for one year. If the bursary is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year if it considers that the student(s academic record in that year justifies that action
- The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the bursary from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the bursary, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment
