Andrew Platts Memorial Prize in Internal Medicine (Rule 105)

The graduating School of Medicine class of 1995 family and friends endowed this prize to honour the memory of their classmate and friend, Dr Andrew Platts.

Dr Andrew Platts moved from Wynyard to Hobart in 1990 to commence first year medicine at the University of Tasmania, graduating with honours in 1995. He worked initially at the Royal Hobart Hospital from 1996-2001. He furthered his advanced training in cardiology at the Monash Medical Centre in 2002 and at the Royal Perth Hospital in 2003 attaining his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in that year. He was undertaking  further training in cardiac electrophysiology and planning to return to Tasmania when he was killed, tragically, in an avalanche on Mount Tasman in New Zealand on 31 December 2003.

Andrew had an infectious smile and endless energy. His loyalty, compassion and integrity were unshakable.  He was passionate and dedicated. He was quick to laugh and slow to judge. He is deeply missed by classmates and friends.

The annual Andrew Platts Memorial Prize in Internal Medicine will inspire future medical students to pursue advanced training in the area of Andrew’s specialisation and ultimately return these skills to the people of Tasmania.
