The Franklin R Fay Prize in Surgical Anatomy (Rule 5)

The Council of the University of Tasmania in pursuance of and exercise of the powers conferred upon it by the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1990 and the Statutes made under the Tasmanian University Act 1951 hereby makes the following Rule:

This Rule shall take effect from 1st October, 1991.

The following Rules of The Franklin R Fay Prize in Surgical Anatomy are made:

Whereas members of the family of the late Franklin R Fay have given the University the sum of $3,000 to establish an annual prize in the Faculty of Medicine [now School of Medicine] in memory of Franklin R Fay, MBBS, FRACS, FACRM, Fellow BMA, Fellow AMA, who was a distinguished surgeon, an outstanding honorary teacher and a loyal member of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine; and whereas the donors have expressed the wish that the prize be awarded to the student who obtains the best mark in surgical anatomy in the third year of the course for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery; and whereas the said sum had been paid to and accepted by the Council  of the University of Tasmania which has agreed to the foundation of such prize under the terms declared in these Rules; it is hereby provided as follows:

1.  The aforesaid sum, together with any accumulation of income from time to time added thereto, shall form the endowment of a prize to be called “The Franklin R. Fay Prize in Surgical Anatomy”.
2.  The prize shall be awarded to the student in the third year of the course for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, who in the third year examinations obtains the highest mark in the surgical anatomy question or questions.
