Mrs Jane R Gillies died in 1997, leaving a bequest of $60,000 to the University. The donor asked that the gift be partially used to endow a prize to be awarded to the student who presents the best thesis in Honours in Genetics. The Council of the University has agreed to the foundation of a prize on the terms set out in these rules.

Rules

1. The amount of $5,000, together with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a prize to be called the Professor WD Jackson Genetics Honours Prize.
2. The prize will be awarded annually to the student who presents the best thesis in Honours in Genetics.
3. The annual value of the prize will be set from time to time by the selection committee established for the Jane R Gillies Tasmania University Honours Scholarship in Botany, having regard to the income from the endowment.
4. All students completing the Honours program in Genetics within the schedule set by the faculty are eligible for the prize.
5. The winner of the prize will be selected by the Honours Examiners’ meeting. The meeting may decide not to award the prize in any year if there is no thesis of sufficient merit, or to share the prize between two or more students
