Rona Hagger Memorial Prize (Rule 17)
Whereas Dr AJ Hagger has given to the University of Tasmania the sum of $9,816 for the purpose of endowing a prize in memory of his late wife Rona Hagger whose pioneering work and leadership in social work was of critical importance in the development of the social work profession in Tasmania, and whereas Dr Hagger has expressed the wish that the prize be awarded in a field allied to social work, and whereas the Council of the University of Tasmania has accepted the donation and agreed to endow a prize in the terms specified by Dr Hagger, it is hereby provided as follows:
Rules
- The aforesaid sum together with any additions thereto and any accumulation of income from time to time shall form the endowment of a prize to be called the Rona Hagger Memorial Prize.
- Students eligible for the prize in any year are those completing an undergraduate course in any faculty, the course having included a major sequence from units in Economics, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology.
- The committee is to award the prize annually to the student who, in the opinion of the committee, obtains the best overall results in one of the degree courses described in 2 above.
- The successful candidate shall be chosen by a committee of six members comprising the Chair of Academic Senate or nominee, the Deans of the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law, Science, Engineering and Technology or Chair of the appropriate Degree Boards, the donor or his nominee and a further member nominated annually by him. After the donor’s death his son Michael shall be a member of the committee during his lifetime and have the right to nominate annually a further member.
- The prize is a cash award and will be accompanied by the summary of Rona Hagger’s life and career prepared by Dr Hagger.
- The value of the award is to be set by Council from time to time, but in view of Dr Hagger’s wish that the real value of the prize is not eroded by in^ation, only half of the income from the endowment will be used to fund the prize. The rest of the income will be added to the capital. Council may vary the proportions from time to time but in doing so shall have in mind the need to maintain the real value of the award.
