Academic Governance

The University of Tasmania Foundation arranges an annual appeal to alumni of the University to fund scholarships for Tasmanian students commencing study at the University.  The money contributed by alumni is held in trust by the University Foundation.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:
 

Rules 

1. The amount of $100,000, together with additional contributions from each Alumni Annual Appeal and any interest from time to time, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the Alumni Annual Appeal Tasmania University Scholarship. 
   
2. The scholarship will be awarded to a Tasmanian student enrolling at the University of Tasmania in any undergraduate degree program at the University of Tasmania.
3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
   • the Chair of Academic Senate (or nominee)
   • the Academic Registrar (or nominee) 
   • the Chair of the University Foundation (or nominee)
4. The scholarship is tenable for the minimum time necessary to complete the degree course, and an extension for honours if applicable, provided that:
   • he student studies full-time, except in special circumstances with the approval of the selection committee
   • the student’s progress in each year is considered by the selection committee to be satisfactory; and
   • the student is not receiving another scholarship from the University of Tasmania 
5.  The detailed selection criteria will be set by the selection committee, having regard to the terms of the endowment.
6. If in any year the Scholarships Management Committee considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate the scholarship or suspend it for one year. If the scholarship is suspended, the Scholarships Management Committee may re-award it to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student’s academic record justifies that action.
7. All other matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment will be determined by the Scholarships Management Committee.
