Daniel Wright Memorial Scholarship in Health Science (Rule 107)
Dr Daniel Wright was a lecturer in the Faculty of Health Science on the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania from 1991 until his death in 2004. He was instrumental in establishing the bioscience curriculum in the Bachelor of Nursing and he also contributed to other programs through his involvement on University committees, including Academic Senate.
Daniel, who completed secondary education at Swan Hill in northern Victoria, was able to complete his B Med Sci (Hons) and MBBS at the University of Melbourne by virtue of an accommodation scholarship awarded in 1980. Throughout his academic career, at UTAS and other institutions, Daniel maintained an interest in equity of access to tertiary education for students from rural and disadvantaged communities and groups.
The Academic Senate has agreed to the creation of a scholarship on the terms of these rules:
Rules
- An initial amount of $XXXXXXX from the School of Human Life Sciences, $XXX donated by the executors of the Daniel Wright estate as well as donations from friends and colleagues of the late Dr Wright form the endowment of a scholarship to be called the ‘Daniel Wright Memorial Scholarship in Health Science’. The final value of the endowment will be determined in December 2007.
- The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is continuing in an undergraduate course in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Tasmania, enrolled in the School of Human Life Sciences or School of Nursing and Midwifery on the Launceston campus and who has already completed at least one full semester of study
- The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- Head of School (Human Life Sciences) or nominee;
- Mrs Anthea Rooney, executor of the Daniel Wright estate, or nominee while she (or her nominee) wishes to be involved;
- Mrs Catherine Darby, executor of the Daniel Wright estate and sister of Daniel, or her nominee while she (or her nominee) wishes to be involved;
- After the end of the involvement of Mrs Darby and Mrs Rooney (or their nominees), two nominees of the Dean of Health Science.
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship with regard to the intention of the donors.
- The initial value of the scholarship will be $1000. The selection committee, in consultation with the Scholarships Office, will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
- The selection committee will report annually to the scholarships management committee on any offers made.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine any other issues relating to the scholarship.
