Dr Sergio Giudici Hydro Tasmania Postgraduate Research Scholarship (Rule 68)
In the late 1940s the ten year old Sergio Giudici migrated to Tasmania from Northern Italy to live in the Butler’s Gorge hydro village.
After graduating in Engineering from the University of Tasmania in 1959 and completing his doctorate at Oxford as a Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar, Segrio Giudici commenced a thirty-seven year engineering career with the Tasmanian Hydro Electric Commission, (now Hydro Tasmania).
His work with the Hydro Electric Commission, particularly in the design and construction of concrete-faced rock-fill dams, is internationally regarded.
Dr Giudici is considered one of Tasmania’s finest engineers, and as a mark of the respect in which he is held, Hydro Tasmania has decided to fund a scholarship in his name to encourage talented graduates to undertake research in engineering or the environmental sciences.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of a scholarship. These are the rules of the scholarship.
Rules
- The scholarship will be known as “Dr Sergio Giudici Hydro Tasmania Postgraduate Research Scholarship”.
- The scholarship will be awarded to a talented student undertaking postgraduate research at the University of Tasmania in any field of engineering or the environmental sciences.
- The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee made up of:
- Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology, or nominee

- Dean of Graduate Studies by Research
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria having regard to the intention of the sponsor. In making a decision, the selection committee will give preference to a person who is eligible to receive an Australian Postgraduate Award, or an equivalent scholarship to pursue research and who, in the committee’s opinion, has outstanding potential in either engineering or the environmental sciences.
- The scholarship will be tenable for three years but an extension of up to six months may be provided at the discretion of the selection committee.
- The recipient of the Dr Sergio Giudici Hydro Tasmania Postgraduate Research Scholarship will be encouraged at an appropriate stage in the scholarship to undertake some aspect of the research program overseas, reflecting Dr Giudici’s experience as a research student.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all matters relating to the scholarship including advertising, application procedures, the method and time of payment and the performance criteria for students receiving the award.
- The selection committee will report to the Scholarships Management Committee on offers made and on the performance of students receiving the award.
- The total value of the scholarship will be $15,000 paid in equal annual amounts over the duration of the scholarship or any other amount agreed by Hydro Tasmania from time to time.
