Fruit Growers Tasmania Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Rule 116)

 

Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc is the peak body representing the interests of the State’s apple, pear and stone fruit industries. It manages this in a variety of ways including investment in research and training, and in the application of knowledge to further improve the technical capacity and value of these industries to the State.

The Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc has determined to endow a scholarship at the University of Tasmania to generally support students in the agricultural sciences and to encourage interest and involvement in this important rural industry.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:

Rules
 
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc to the University of Tasmania Foundation, together with any future donations and accrued interest, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "Fruit Growers Tasmania Scholarship in Agricultural Science".
    • The amounts referred to in Rule 1 will, for the purposes of these rules, be referred to as ‘the fund’.
    • (The income generated by the fund will be used to provide a scholarship for an eligible undergraduate student in the School of Agricultural Science. 
    • Any amount provided under Rule 2(b) above will be matched by the University of Tasmania Foundation from its General Scholarships Trust.
  2. The scholarship will be awarded by a Management Committee comprising:
    • Two representatives of Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc
    • One industry representative, nominated by Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc
    • The Head of the School of Agricultural Science or a nominee
    • A lecturer in horticulture or a nominee of the School of Agricultural Science
  3. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria having regard to the intention of Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc in making the endowment.
  4. The award is tenable for the remaining duration of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
    • continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science, or in part-time study approved by the selection committee
    • continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee
    • through study options demonstrating an interest in the industries represented by the Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc
    • not receiving another scholarship through the School of Agricultural Science
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
  6. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
