Hilary and Alan Wallace Scholarship In Medicine (Rule 123)

Doctors Hilary and Alan Wallace made a significant contribution to the Tasmanian community through their professional lives and have been generous supporters of the University of Tasmania and Jane Franklin Hall.

The Wallaces have determined to endow a scholarship at the University of Tasmania to support students from the North and North-West of Tasmania to study in Medicine.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules:

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by Hilary and Alan Wallace to the University of Tasmania Foundation, together with any future donations and accrued interest, (the Fund) forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “Hilary and Alan Wallace Scholarship in Medicine” (the Scholarship).
  2. The Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis and will be comprised of:
    • The amount generated from the Fund;
    • An equivalent amount contributed by the University of Tasmania Foundation from its General Scholarships Trust.
  3. The Scholarship may only be awarded to an eligible undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health Science.
  4. The Scholarship will be determined by a selection committee comprising:
    • The Dean of the Faculty of Health Science, or nominee;
    • The Principal of Jane Franklin Hall, or nominee;
    • Up to two nominees of the University Foundation with those nominees being Dr Hilary Wallace and Dr Alan Wallace while they wish to be involved.
  5. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria with regard to the intention of Drs Hilary and Alan Wallace in providing the endowment. In making its selection, however, the committee will give preference to:
    • a talented student from the North-West or North of Tasmania who will need financial assistance to move away from home to undertake study at the University of Tasmania; and
    • a student who demonstrates the personal qualities and achievements which would indicate they could be successful college residents.
  6. The Scholarship is tenable for one year of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
    • continuing in full-time study in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course or in part-time study if approved by the selection committee;
    • continuing to make satisfactory academic progress in the opinion of the selection committee;
    • continuing to reside at Jane Franklin Hall and making a contribution to college life;
    • not receiving another scholarship of significant value through the University of Tasmania.
  7. The University Foundation will set the annual value of the Scholarship from time to time, with regard to the income from the Fund.
  8. The Tasmania Scholarships Office will determine all other matters concerning the Scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
