Nick Martin Tasmania University Scholarship in Surveying and Spatial Sciences (Rule 47)
Mr Nick Martin was a staff member of the Department of Surveying at the University before establishing a successful career in information technology and electronics. In recognition of his association with the University, he has generously agreed to endow a perpetual scholarship in the Centre for Spatial Information Science in the School of Geography and Environmental Studies to support commencing students in the Bachelor of Geomatics.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- An amount of $95,000 donated by Mr Nick Martin, together with a matching contribution provided by the University Foundation, along with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “Nick Martin Tasmania University Scholarship in Surveying and Spatial Sciences”.
- The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student who is eligible to commence an undergraduate course in the Bachelor of Geomatics.
- The scholarship will be advertised Australia wide.
- The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- the Head of the School of Geography and Environmental Studies or a nominee;
- the Head of Discipline of the Centre for Spatial Information Science;
- another member of academic staff in the discipline of Spatial Information Science nominated by the head of the discipline.
- The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of excellence of results in Year 11 and 12 subjects or their equivalent. The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment
- Other things being approximately equal, the selection committee will take account of the financial position of individual students with a view that preference will be given to the student most in need of financial assistance.
- The award is tenable for a maximum of four years provided the student studies full time and the selection committee is satisfied with the student’s progress in each year of study. Part-time study may be permitted at the discretion of the selection committee.
- The selection committee may terminate the student’s award, or suspend it for one year, if it considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory in any year. If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year, provided the committee considers the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
