Robert Menary Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Rule 48)
Professor Robert Menary worked with distinction over many years in the University of Tasmania’s School of Agricultural Science. On his retirement in 1997 the School of Agricultural Science wished to recognise his contribution to teaching and research in the discipline and has agreed to endow a scholarship for students in the School of Agricultural Science.
The original capital amount of the trust has been augmented since then regularly by donations from Professor Menary, Horticulture Australia Limited and the University Foundation. The original rules of the scholarship have been amended in 2011 to reflect this generosity.
The Academic Senate of the University agrees to the foundation of an endowed scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
1. An original amount of $72,000 provided by the School of Agricultural Science, together with additional amounts provided by Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL), Professor Robert Menary and the University of Tasmania Foundation, along with interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “Robert Menary Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science”.
2. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is eligible to commence the second year of an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science. If no second year student of adequate quality presents, a student eligible to enter the third year of an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science may be considered.
3. Where more than one outstanding applicant is available for the scholarship, preference will be given to a student who does not currently hold another scholarship or another form of financial assistance provided to support study at university.
4. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- the Head of the School of Agricultural Science;
- Professor Robert Menary or his nominee (while he wishes to be involved);
- the course coordinator for the discipline of Agricultural Science or nominee; and
- another member of full-time academic staff nominated by academic staff of the School of Agricultural Science.
5. The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment.
6.1 The award is tenable for the remaining duration of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
- continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science, or in part-time study approved by the selection committee
- continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee
6.2 The selection committee may terminate the student’s award or suspend it for one year, if it considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory in any year. If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year, if it considers the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
7. The selection committee will determine all matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
8. The University Foundation will recognise HAL as a donor to the Robert Menary Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science Trust.
Made by Academic Senate on 2 March 2011 and amended by Academic Senate on 15 April 2011
