Rose-Marie LeRoi Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts (Rule 82)
Rose-Marie LeRoi was instrumental in bringing an awareness of the arts to West Coast mining communities in the 1970s and early 1980s. Her first art exhibition was held to raise funds for the local church and primary school, and was opened by the Tasmanian Premier, Mr Eric Reece. She established an art gallery in Zeehan, obtained funding for an art acquisition program, organised exhibitions and encouraged local artist participation. She also taught art through Adult Education, to TAFE students in Queenstown and ran school holiday programs.
Rose-Marie’s interests were also in the performing arts where she organised school productions, supported the local theatre group, and encouraged visiting performers to include the West Coast on their itineraries.
The Academic Senate has agreed to the creation of a scholarship on the terms of these rules:
Rules
- An initial amount of $5000 donated by the family of Rose-Marie LeRoi to the University of Tasmania forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the ‘Rose-Marie LeRoi Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts’.
- The scholarship is to be awarded to a woman student whose permanent home address is in a regional or rural area of Tasmania and who is commencing an undergraduate course in the fine arts at the University of Tasmania.
