Medical Council of Tasmania Medical Student Scholarship (Rule 138)
The Medical Council of Tasmania, upon its dissolution in 2010, provided the University of Tasmania Foundation (Foundation) with a $1 million gift to endow scholarships for deserving Tasmanian students to study medicine at UTAS. The University, through the Foundation, provided a further $150,000.The Medical Council of Tasmania was established in 1907. Its precursor the Court of Medical Examiners was established in 1837. It was the first body established in Australia for the registration of medical practitioners. With the establishment of the Medical Board of Australia on 1 July 2010 the Medical Council of Tasmania became the State Committee of the Medical Board of Australia.
These are the rules of the Scholarship.
Rules
1. The amount of $1,150,000, together with any interest from time to time, forms the endowment of the Scholarship to be called the "Medical Council of Tasmania Medical Student Scholarship".
2. The income generated by the fund will be used to provide the Scholarship.
3. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a Tasmanian student commencing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree who has undertaken secondary school education in Tasmania and can demonstrate financial need.
4. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee appointed annually comprising:
- up to three nominees of the State committee of the Medical Board of Australia;
- the Head of the School of Medicine or nominee;
- one nominee from the Foundation who will Chair the selection committee.
5. Members of the selection committee representing the State Committee of the Medical Board of Australia may include but not be limited to:
- past presidents or members of the Medical Council of Tasmania; and/or
- the current President, past presidents, members or past members of the State committee of the Medical Board of Australia.
6. The role of the selection committee is to annually select students currently enrolled or about to enrol in the first year of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree at UTAS who would, in the opinion of the selection committee, benefit from an annual scholarship at an initial amount of $8,000 annually or such other amount which the selection committee considers appropriate.
7. Other roles of the selection committee include:
- reviewing these Rules with any subsequent changes agreed by the State committee of the Medical Board of Australia;
- reviewing the financial position of the fund; and
- reviewing the amount of the award in consultation with the UTAS Foundation.
8. The selection committee shall determine its own processes of selecting students and may in respect of any or all of the students:
- seek written or verbal reports from the Head of the School of Medicine; and/or
- conduct screening interviews with the selected students.
9. The selection committee shall determine the format and structure of the assessment process and any interviews.
10. The scholarships are tenable for up to five years, provided that:
- the student studies full-time;
- the student's progress in each year is satisfactory to the selection committee;
- the student continues to demonstrate a financial need; and
- the student is not in receipt of another scholarship from the University of Tasmania.
11. If, at any time, the selection committee considers the progress of the student it has selected to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate or suspend the scholarship for one year. If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student's academic record justifies that action.
