Amber Weatherstone Memorial Scholarship (Rule 85)

Amber Weatherstone was a compassionate, energetic and respected student who inspired her colleagues in the University of Tasmania’s School of Medicine. She was in her second year of study when she died in a car accident in November 2001.

Amber was passionate about her medical studies, in particular her interest in the area of sports medicine. At the time she would have graduated in 2005, her medical classmates, together with Amber’s family and friends agreed to endow a scholarship to assist future UTAS medical students to pursue their interest in sports medicine.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship. These are the rules:

Rules
  1. An amount of $15,000 donated by family, classmates and friends of the late Amber Weatherstone, to the University of Tasmania, together with any income (by way of interest earned) from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "Amber Weatherstone Memorial Scholarship".
  2. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is eligible to undertake an elective or a period of advanced study in the general area of sports medicine.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    • Mr Mark Weatherstone, Amber’s father, or another nominated member of the Weatherstone family;
    • the Head of the School of Medicine or a nominee; and
    • a person, nominated by the Head of School of Medicine, who, where possible, is a doctor from Amber’s graduating class.
  4.  The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship having regard to the intention of the donors.  However, in its selection, the committee shall:
    • give priority to students in the later years of the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery course;
    • take into account the personal qualities and achievements of prospective recipients; and
    • take into account the likely contribution that prospective recipients will make to advancing awareness and understanding of sports medicine amongst their peers.
  5. The selection committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income of the fund of the endowment.
  6. The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
