The Australian Croation Social and Sporting Club (Rule 80)

The Australian Croatian Social and Sporting Club of Launceston provided for the cultural and social interests of the Croatian community in northern Tasmania for over 30 years.  On winding up the Club in 2004, the Committee of the association determined that some of the Club’s resources should be used to fund a scholarship at the University of Tasmania to support Croatian students or students of Croatian descent to study at the University.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000, together with any interest from time to time, forms the capital of a scholarship to be called “The Australian Croatian Social and Sporting Club of Launceston Scholarship”.
  2. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a student, preferably a Tasmanian resident, who is of Croatian origin or who is a descendant of a person of Croatian origin.
  3. The Scholarship may be awarded to a student commencing an undergraduate course at the University of Tasmania or to a student who has already completed one or more years of study at the University.
  4. The Scholarship will be awarded by a Selection Committee consisting of:
    • the Chair of Academic Senate or nominee
    • the Academic Registrar or nominee
    • the Manager of Student Services or nominee
  5. The Selection Committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the Scholarship having regard to the intention of the endowment.
  6. The Scholarship is normally tenable for one year but the Selection Committee may re-offer it to the same student in a subsequent year.
  7. A student will normally be expected to study full-time.  Where the Selection Committee approves the offer of a scholarship for part-time study, payment of the scholarship will be pro-rata.
  8.  In making a decision on the scholarship, the Selection Committee will give preference to the student it believes is most in need of the financial support of the scholarship.
  9. If in any year no students of Croatian origin or descent apply for the Scholarship, the Selection Committee may opt not to make an award in that year or to award it to a student studying:
    • in an academic area which examines the history, culture, social or political life of Croatians
    • a European language or the history or culture of Europeans considered appropriate by the Committee, or
    • another discipline the Committee considers would have been regarded as relevant by the donor.
  10. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the Scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
