The Bonnie Tilley Scholarship for Tasmanian Women (Rule 66)

Mrs Bonnie Tilley is a graduate of the University of Tasmania.  Her inspiration to study at university largely resulted from the experience of her mother who at a relatively young age travelled from Tasmania’s remote West Coast to Hobart to attend high school and later Teacher’s College.  Bonnie Tilley thus has a strong desire to encourage women from regional or rural areas of the State to obtain the benefits which university education provided for her mother and herself.  She has decided to help by funding a scholarship at the University of Tasmania to support women to enrol at the University.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.

Rules
  1. The scholarship will be known as The Bonnie Tilley Scholarship for Tasmanian Women.
  2. The scholarship is to be awarded to a woman student commencing a degree course at the University of Tasmania with preference for a woman whose permanent home address is in a rural or regional area of Tasmania.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    • the Chair of Academic Senate (or nominee)
    • the Academic Registrar (or nominee)
    • Mrs Bonnie Tilley, while she wishes to be involved, and
    • after the end of the involvement of Mrs Tilley, the Manager of Student Services or nominee
  4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship having regard to the intention of the donor.  However, in its selection, the committee shall give priority to a talented woman student who will need financial assistance to undertake study at the University of Tasmania.
  5. The scholarship is tenable for up to four years provided the student’s progress in each year of the course is considered by the selection committee to be satisfactory.
  6. The selection committee may terminate a student’s scholarship or suspend it for one year if it considers the student’s progress is unsatisfactory.  If the award is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student for a following year if it considers that the student’s academic record the previous year justifies that action.
  7. The annual value of the scholarship is $3,000 or any amount agreed by Mrs Bonnie Tilley, from time to time.
  8. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
