The Burke Scholarship (Rule 127)
John Francis Arthur Burke was born in Tasmania and educated at St Virgil’s College in Hobart. He worked most of his life as a general and psychiatric nurse in the New South Wales health system.
In his estate, Mr Burke arranged to endow a scholarship in the University’s Faculty of Law to allow graduates of the Faculty to pursue postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
1. An amount of $184 000 donated by the late Mr John Francis Arthur Burke to the University of Tasmania, together with any income by way of interest earned from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called ‘The Burke Scholarship’.
2. The Scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of the Faculty of Law who intends to undertake postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.
3. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
a. the Head of the School of Law or nominee;
b. the Deputy Head of the School of Law or nominee;
c. the Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Law or nominee.
4. The Selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria for the Scholarship having regard to the intention of the donor.
5. The scholarship will be used to fund costs associated with studying in a postgraduate course in the United Kingdom. The course of study being undertaken by the student, and the institution providing that course, will be approved by the selection committee, in its absolute discretion.
6. The value of the scholarship will be determined from time to time by the selection committee having regard to the income in the endowment.
7. The Scholarship may not be awarded in any year if, in the opinion of the selection committee in its absolute discretion, no candidate is deserving of it or no proposed study program is approved by it.
8. The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and on the progress of a candidate receiving the scholarship.
