Department of Police and Emergency Management Scholarship (Rule 53)
The Department of Police and Emergency Management wishes to encourage employees to undertake tertiary education at the University of Tasmania, particularly in the area of Police Studies. To support this aim, the Department of Police and Emergency Management has endowed a scholarship at the University to be made available to outstanding members of the Department studying here.
Academic Senate has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship on the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- An amount of $75,000 provided by the Department of Police and Emergency Management, together with a contribution of $75,000 provided by the University Foundation, along with interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “Department of Police and Emergency Management Scholarship”.
- Members of the Tasmania Police or employees of the Department of Police and Emergency Management will be eligible to be awarded the scholarship.
- The scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies) or another undergraduate or postgraduate course approved by the selection committee and may be awarded to students commencing the course or to students who have already successfully completed one or more years in that course.
- The scholarships will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- the Deputy Commissioner of Police or a nominee
- the Dean of the Faculty of Arts or a nominee
- the course coordinator of the Bachelor of Social Science (Police Studies), and
- a representative of the Department of Police and Emergency Management who is nominated by the Commissioner of Police.
- The value of the scholarship will be determined by the selection committee having regard to the funds available in any year from the endowment.
- The scholarship may be provided for either full-time or part-time study, conditional on the student remaining an employee of the Department of Police and Emergency Management.
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria for the scholarship having regard to the intentions of the Department.
- The selection committee may award a scholarship, which is to be called the ‘Commissioner of Police Scholarship’, on a recommendation made by the Commissioner of Police each year.
- If in any year the selection committee considers a student’s progress is unsatisfactory, it may terminate the student’s scholarship or suspend it for one year. If the award is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year if it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
- All other matters concerning the scholarship, including application procedures, advertising, number of awards made, and method and time of payment will be made by the selection committee.
- The selection committee will report annually to the Scholarships Management Committee on offers made and on the progress of students receiving the awards.
