E.M.B. Mann Tasmania University Scholarship (Rule 62)
By the time Ethel May Barbara Mann graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1923 she had already overcome the obstacles of being a woman student in an era when education for women was still uncommon, particularly in the sciences. She had also got round the problems of travel from a remote area first to Launceston High School and then to university.
Before and during her university studies in Mathematics, Chemistry, English and Latin, she was a practising teacher at Launceston and Hobart High Schools.
After her marriage she no longer taught but her interest in education and knowledge has been carried on by her daughters who have established this scholarship in her honour to encourage the communication of science through teaching, writing, research and other fields.
The Academic Senate has agreed to the establishment of the E.M.B. Mann Tasmania University Scholarship and these rules apply.
Rules
- An amount of $50,000, contributed by the daughters of E.M.B. Mann, along with a matching amount provided by the University of Tasmania Foundation, together with any interest from time to time, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the “E.M.B. Mann Tasmania University Scholarship”.

- continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee
- The selection committee may terminate a student’s scholarship or suspend it. If suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student for a following year if it considers that the student’s performance in the previous year justifies that action.
- The Tasmania Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
- The Tasmania Scholarships Management Committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the scholarship.
