George Wade Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Rule 77)

George Wade received his Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Master of Agricultural Science degrees from the University of Melbourne and after several years of service in the Victorian Department of Agriculture was appointed Chief Plant Pathologist in the Tasmanian Department of Agriculture. While working with the Tasmanian Department he developed the plant pathology section and conducted research on a range of plant diseases. The reports of this work resulted in the award of the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Tasmania.

Professor Wade was appointed to the Foundation Chair of Agricultural Science in 1962 and the full course was organised for enrolment of the first students in 1963. He was responsible for establishing the present disciplines within the School of Agricultural Science, including subjects related to Horticulture. From the beginning, Professor Wade gave leadership in the area of research and although he retired in 1981 that emphasis has continued and grown.

A scholarship bearing his name has been set up to perpetuate his innovation in agricultural education and research.  The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:

Rules
  1. An amount of $20,000 donated by Professor George Wade to the University of Tasmania Foundation, together with any future donations from his estate and accrued interest, forms the endowment of a scholarship  to be called the "George Wade Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science".
    • The amounts referred to in Rule 1 will, for the purposes of these rules, be referred to as “the fund.
    • ”The income generated by the fund will be used to provide a scholarship for an eligible undergraduate student in the School of Agricultural Science.
    • Any amount provided under Rule 2(b) above will be matched by the University of Tasmania Foundation from its General Scholarships Trust.
  2. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising: 
    • the Head of the School of Agricultural Science or a nominee 
    • the course coordinator of the School of Agricultural Science or nominee
    • another member of full-time academic staff elected by full-time academic staff of the School of Agricultural Science
    • Professor Wade or his nominee
  3. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria having regard to the intention of Professor Wade in making the endowment.
  4. The award is tenable for the remaining duration of the student’s course of study, subject to the student-
    • continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science, or in part-time study approved by the selection committee 
    • continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee not receiving another scholarship through the School of Agricultural Science 
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
  6. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.<
