Graeme Tole University Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Rule 109)

Graeme Tole was an innovative Tasmanian farmer who made a valuable contribution to the prime lamb industry, Tasmanian Rural Youth and in the wider rural community. Graeme Tole’s estate, along with friends and associates, determined that a scholarship should be established to fund the development of talent in the Tasmanian agricultural sector, particularly in the area of extensive agricultural production. They have agreed to endow a scholarship in the agricultural sciences at the University of Tasmania to assist students to pursue excellence in the discipline.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by Graeme Tole’s family along with friends and colleagues to the University of Tasmania Foundation, together with any future donations and accrued interest, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the ‘Graeme Tole University Scholarship in Agricultural Science’.
    • The amounts referred to in Rule 1 will, for the purposes of these rules, be referred to as ‘the fund’;
    • The income generated by the fund will be used to provide a scholarship for an eligible undergraduate student in the School of Agricultural Science;
    • Any amount provided under Rule 2(b) above will be matched by the University of Tasmania Foundation from its General Scholarships Trust.
  2. The scholarship will be offered to a commencing student enrolling in a degree course in the School of Agricultural Science, unless determined otherwise by the selection committee.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    • Head of the School of Agricultural Science or a nominee;
    • Degree coordinator of the School of Agricultural Science or nominee;
    • Two nominees of the Tole family, while they wish to be involved;
    • President of the Rural Youth Organisation of Tasmania Inc. or nominee;
    • After the end of involvement of the Tole family, a nominee of the Tasmanian Farmers and Grazier’s Association
  4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship with regard to the intention of the donors in making the endowment.
  5. The award is tenable for the (remaining) duration of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
    continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science, or in part-time study approved by the selection committee;
    continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee;
    through study options demonstrating an interest in Tasmanian agriculture, in particular animal production;
    not receiving another scholarship through the School of Agricultural Science, or one deemed by the selection committee, in its absolute discretion, equivalent.
  6. The selection committee may terminate the student’s award or suspend it for one year if it considers, in its absolute discretion, that the student’s progress is unsatisfactory in any year.  If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year if it considers, in its absolute discretion, that the student’s academic record during the year of suspension justifies that action.
  7. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, with regard to the income from the endowment.
  8. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
  9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the scholarship.
