Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarships (Rule 54)
The Late Harold White Carroll, a retired grazier from Devonport on his death in 2000 established a fund to be held on trust by Perpetual Trustees Tasmania Ltd to provide scholarships for deserving students from the City of Devonport to allow them to continue their studies. The Academic Senate has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship. These are the rules of the scholarship.
Rules
- The Scholarship will be known as the 'Harold Carroll Memorial Scholarship'.
- The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has completed at least some part of primary or secondary education in a school in the City of Devonport and who is enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or post-graduate course at the University of Tasmania.
- The scholarship may be awarded to a student commencing a degree course at the University or to a student who has successfully completed one or more years in that course.
- A selection committee consisting of:
- The Director of the North-West Centre of the University of Tasmania or nominee
- The Principal of St Brendan-Shaw College or nominee
- The Principal of The Don College or nominee
- A member of the community from Devonport, nominated by the Vice-Chancellor will make a recommendations to the Trustee for approval of a scholarship.
- The scholarship is tenable for the minimum time necessary to complete the degree course provided that:
- The student studies full-time or to an extent deemed by the committee equivalent to full-time.
- The student's progress is in any year considered by the selection committee to be satisfactory An extension of one year for honours will be permitted at the discretion of the committee.
- The selection committee may terminate the student's award or suspend it for one year, if it considers the student's progress to be unsatisfactory in any year. If the award is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student's academic record in that year justifies that action.
- The selection committee, having regard to the terms of the bequest, will set the detailed selection criteria. However, the scholarship is only available for:
- A competent student who is likely to be successful as a result of solid application
- A student who might not otherwise be able to afford tertiary education
- A student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, is of good character and who has contributed, or is likely to contribute, to the community.
- The selection committee will, in consultation with Perpetual Trustees Tasmania, determine all other matters concerning the scholarship including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application and selection procedures, and the method and time of payment.
- The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate and to Perpetual Trustees on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the award.
