J Malcolm Gillies Tasmania University Honours Scholarship in Genetics (Rule 33)
Mrs Jane Gillies has bequeathed $60,000 to the University. Mrs Gillies asked that the gift be used to endow scholarships, prizes and medals in Plant Science at the University. The Council has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship on the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- The amount of $25,000, part of the bequest, together with any interest from time to time on that part, forms the endowment of the J Malcolm Gillies Tasmania University Honours Scholarship in Genetics.
- The selection committee will award the scholarship to a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science with Honours course at the University, or any other honours course at the University that is acceptable to the committee.
- The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising the Head of the School of Plant Science and 2 other members elected by and from the [full time] academic staff of the school.
- The scholarship is normally tenable for one year’s full time study. The selection committee may, in its discretion, permit part time study for 2 years.
- The selection committee will set detailed selection criteria, having regard to the terms of the bequest.
- The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment.
- The selection committee will report annually to the Academic Senate on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the scholarship.
