Jan Sedivka Tasmania University Scholarship in Music (Rule 32)
Friends of the distinguished master musician in residence at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music have given $30,000 to the University. The donors have asked that the gift be used to endow a scholarship to recognise the work of Jan Sedivka on behalf of music students, and that the scholarship be awarded to outstanding students in stringed instruments studying music in a degree course at the University of Tasmania. The Council has agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship on the terms declared in these rules.
Rules
- The amount of $30,000, together with any additional money given to the University by the friends of Jan Sedivka, and any interest from time to time, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the Jan Sedivka Tasmania University Scholarship in Music.
- The selection committee is to award the scholarship to a student who is enrolled in a degree course which includes at least one unit of music, and who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has outstanding potential in playing a stringed instrument.
- The selection committee may award the scholarship either to a student commencing study in that degree course or to a student who has already completed successfully one or more years in that course.
- The selection committee for the scholarship is to comprise:
- the Chair of Academic Senate (or nominee)
- the Academic Registrar (or nominee)*
- Associate Professor Edwin Paling. After the end of the involvement of A/Prof Paling a person nominated by the Scholarship selection committee.
- Mr Christian Wojtowicz (while he wishes to be involved). After the end of the involvement of Mr Wojtowicz a person nominated by the Scholarship selection committee. The selection committee may take into account the opinion of Mr Jan Sedivka in its consideration of candidates, while he wishes to be involved.
- The scholarship is tenable for one year, but the selection committee may extend it at the discretion of the committee.
If the selection committee considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory, it may terminate the scholarship or suspend it for one year. - If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria, having regard to the terms of the bequest.
- The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards offered, the value of each award, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment.
