John C Bowden Tasmania University Scholarship (Rule 67)

John C Bowden is an American - Australian businessman who has developed a number of interests in Tasmania, which he now considers his second home.

He has an enormous interest in the future of the State and believes that by encouraging young people through education they will in time make a vital contribution to the future growth and development of Tasmania.

He has generously endowed this scholarship to assist Tasmanians to enrol at the University of Tasmania to undertake degree courses in areas related to Tasmania’s economic development.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to establish a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by Mr John C Bowden to the University of Tasmania, together with a contribution of $50,000 provided by the University of Tasmania Foundation, along with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "John C Bowden Tasmania University Scholarship".
  2. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is eligible to undertake an undergraduate course in the Faculty of Commerce or in another undergraduate degree course relevant to Tasmania’s economic development. 
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising: 
    • The Chair of Academic Senate or a nominee 
    • The Academic Registrar or a nominee 
    • A member of academic staff nominated by the Vice-Chancellor 
  4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment. 
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment. 
  6. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
