John Kable Memorial Tasmania University Scholarship (Rule 37)

The estate of the late John Kable gave $200,000 to the University, to be used to endow a scholarship in honour of John Kable. The scholarship is to be awarded to Tasmanian students deserving of assistance and studying in the Law School at the University. The Council agreed to the foundation of an endowed scholarship. These are the rules of the scholarship.

Rules
  1. The amount of $200,000, together with any interest from time to time, forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the ‘John Kable Tasmania University Memorial Scholarship’.
  2. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is enrolled full-time in the course of Bachelor of Laws, or a combined degree course that includes Bachelor of Laws, at the University and who has already successfully completed one year only of full-time study at a University.
  3. A selection committee consisting of:
    • the Chair of Academic Senate or nominee
    • a nominee of the Law Society of Tasmania
    • 2 nominees of the trustee of the late John Kable–
    will award the scholarship.
  4. The award is tenable for a maximum of 4 years, subject to the student –
    • continuing in full-time study for a Bachelor of Laws degree, or a combined degree that includes Bachelor of Laws,
    • continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee.
  5. The selection committee may terminate the student’s award or suspend it for one year, if it considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory in any year. If the award is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year, if it considers that the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
  6. The selection committee, having regard to the terms of the bequest, will set the detailed selection criteria. However, the scholarship is only open to a student:
    • who undertook the great majority of their secondary schooling at a State school in Tasmania; and
    • who is enrolled in the course of Bachelor of Laws, or a combined degree course that includes Bachelor of Laws, at the University.
  7. The value of the award will be $3,000 a year, or any other sum determined by the selection committee from time to time.
  8. The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including the frequency and number of awards offered, advertising, application procedures, and the method and time of payment.
  9. The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the award.
