The Lois and Alan Dann Scholarship in Science (Rule 96)
Lois and Alan Dann are a successful Tasmanian business couple who over the years in their commercial activities have worked with many young people and been inspired by their commitment, idealism and enthusiasm.
To encourage more young Tasmanians to continue their studies into higher education, they have agreed to fund a scholarship in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology to assist a student achieve success in the life sciences.
The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship. These are the rules:
Rules
- The scholarship will be known as “The Lois and Alan Dann Scholarship in Science”.
- The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is eligible to commence an undergraduate course in the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology and where the student has indicated an interest in studying a life sciences major, particularly in the disciplines of botany or zoology.
- The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
- The Chair of Academic Senate,or nominee;
- The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology, or nominee;
- Mrs Lois Dann and Mr Alan Dann (while they wish to be involved); or a nominee of either;
- After the end of the involvement of Mrs Lois Dann and Mr Alan Dann or their nominees, a person nominated by the Vice-Chancellor.
- The selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria having regard to the intention of the donor in establishing the scholarship.
- The award is tenable for the remaining duration of the student’s course of study, subject to the student:
- continuing in full-time study in an undergraduate course in the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology or in another faculty approved by the selection committee; or
- in part-time study approved by the selection committee; and
- continuing to make satisfactory progress in the opinion of the selection committee.
- The selection committee may terminate the student’s award or suspend it for one year if it considers the student’s progress to be unsatisfactory in any year. If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award the scholarship to the same student after that year if it considers the student’s academic record in that year justifies that action.
- The annual value of the scholarship is $3,000 or any other amount agreed by Mrs Lois Dann and Mr Alan Dann from time to time.
- The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
- The selection committee will report annually to Academic Senate on offers made and the progress of candidates receiving the scholarship.
