The Martin Davies Memorial Scholarship (Rule 118)

Martin Davies, who died on 24 November 1995 while working in Antarctica, played a leading role in the fight to establish the conservation of the Tasmanian cultural environment as a priority for governments and the community. Though his enthusiasm and his work he brought both passion and rigour to analysing, conserving and interpreting the heritage of Tasmania.

A generous gift to the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) by the Davies family has allowed the Trust to donate this annual scholarship to the University of Tasmania to recognise Martin Davies’ legacy.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the foundation of a scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.

Rules
  1. The scholarship will be known as “The Martin Davies Memorial Scholarship”.
  2. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Environmental Design (Honours), the Bachelor of Architecture (Honours), the Master of Architecture or a Research Higher Degree in the School of Architecture and Design, or to a student enrolled in a similar level course in another School, where the focus of the study is the historic cultural heritage (including architectural history), built/architectural heritage or its conservation.
  3. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    • the Head of School of Architecture & Design or nominee; 
    • a member of the academic staff at the School of Architecture & Design;  
    • the Managing Director of the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania); and  
    • two nominated members of Martin Davies family if they wish to be involved. 
  4. The Selection committee will set the detailed selection criteria for the Scholarship having regard to the intentions of the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) in establishing the scholarship.
  5. The value of the scholarship will be $5,000 or any amount determined by the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania).
  6. The scholarship may be not be awarded in any year if, in the opinion of the selection committee, no applicant of sufficient merit presents.
  7. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
