Nick Cretan Tasmania University Scholarship in Tourism (Rule 52)

Mr Nick Cretan, one of Tasmania’s prominent and respected business leaders, brought his considerable talents and expertise to the University Foundation in 1994 when he took on the role of inaugural chair. His valuable service and commitment has been largely responsible for the success of the University Foundation.  Mr Cretan was made a Fellow of the University of Tasmania in 1998.

He has generously agreed to endow a perpetual scholarship in the Bachelor of Tourism degree to encourage talented people to enter the tourism industry.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to establish an endowed scholarship in the terms declared in these rules.

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by Mr Nick Cretan to the University of Tasmania, together with a contribution of $50,000 provided by the University Foundation, along with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "Nick Cretan Tasmania University Scholarship in Tourism".
  2. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is eligible to enter the Bachelor of Tourism course. 
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising: 
    • The Dean of the Faculty of Arts or a nominee
    • The Head of  Tourism at the UniversityA member of the Cretan family, while they wish to be involved 
    • (After the end of the involvement of the Cretan family)  a person nominated by the Vice-Chancellor
  4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment.
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
  6. The selection committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment. 
  7. The selection committee will report annually to the Scholarships Management Committee on offers made and on the progress of students receiving the awards.
