The Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship (Rule 140)

2013 marks the centenary of the founding of Hobart High School and its successor institutions, Hobart Matriculation College and Hobart College. To celebrate the significant milestone in state education for Tasmania, the Old Hobartian Association has worked with former students of the school and college to raise the capital funds needed to create a perpetual scholarship at the University of Tasmania. The Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship will annually support students graduating from Hobart College to study in any discipline at UTAS.

UTAS has recognised the importance of this anniversary, the achievement of the school and college over the past century and the significant number of students from the School who are amongst its alumni by agreeing to waive the fees levied for a course studied by a student while receiving the scholarship.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of a scholarship. These are the rules.

Rules

1. An amount of $200,000 generated by a public appeal to former students, together with any other donations received or other income (by way of interest earned) from time to time, forms the endowment of the 'Old Hobartian Centenary Scholarship'.

2. The scholarship is to be awarded to a Tasmanian student who is enrolling for the first time in an undergraduate course in any Faculty at the University of Tasmania and who has completed their pre-tertiary studies at Hobart College not more than two years before commencing at UTAS.

3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:

  • The President of the Old Hobartian Association, or nominee;
  • The Principal of Hobart College, or nominee;
  • A representative of the Old Hobartian Association appointed by the Association;
  • A nominee of the UTAS Foundation.

4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria for the scholarship. However, in making its decision each year, the committee should pay regard to the preference of many donors that the scholarship supports students with outstanding academic and /or civic achievement who might not otherwise be able to afford tertiary education and who have made a contribution to the College or the community or have the potential to do so in the future.

5. The scholarship will consist of two components:

  • a monetary payment drawn from the trust fund for the endowment, and
  • the course fees charged for Australian students for the studentâs course which will be paid by the University of Tasmania.

6. The scholarship is tenable for one year but may be extended for a further year at the discretion of the selection committee if, based on advice from the UTAS Foundation, income in the endowment permits it.

7. The Scholarship may not be held at the same time as any other significant scholarship, except with the approval of the selection committee.

8. The selection committee may terminate a studentâs scholarship or suspend it for one year if it considers, in its absolute discretion, that the studentâs progress is unsatisfactory.  If the scholarship is suspended, the selection committee may re-award it to the same student after that year if it considers, in its absolute discretion, that the studentâs academic record during the year of suspension justifies that action.

9. The University Foundation will set the annual value of the scholarship having regard to the income of the trust fund of the endowment.

10. The University Foundation will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
