Robert Gatenby Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Rule 61)

Robert Gatenby was an innovative Tasmanian farmer and horticulturalist before his early death in a light plane crash in 1992. Robert Gatenby’s estate, along with friends and associates, determined that a trust should be established to fund the development of talent in the Tasmanian agricultural sector, particularly in the areas of horticulture, grains and seed production research and training.  The trustees have further agreed to endow a scholarship in the agricultural sciences at the University of Tasmania to encourage students to pursue excellence in the discipline. This endowed scholarship has been enabled by significant support to the Robert Gatenby Trust, received from the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

The Academic Senate of the University has agreed to the establishment of an endowed scholarship.  These are the rules of the scholarship:

Rules
  1. An amount of $50,000 donated by The Robert Gatenby Trust to the University of Tasmania, together with a contribution of $50,000 provided by the University Foundation, along with any interest from time to time forms the endowment of a scholarship to be called the "Robert Gatenby Tasmania University Scholarship in Agricultural Science".
  2. Having regard to the income from the endowment, it is the intention that a scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is eligible to undertake an undergraduate or postgraduate course in the School of Agricultural Science.
  3. The scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee comprising:
    • the Head of the School of Agricultural Science or a nominee
    • a trustee of the Robert Gatenby Trust appointed by the Trust
    • the course coordinator of the School of Agricultural Science or nominee.
  4. The selection committee will set the detailed selection and performance criteria having regard to the intention of the endowment.
  5. The Scholarships Management Committee will set the annual value of the scholarship from time to time, having regard to the income from the endowment.
  6. The Scholarships Management Committee will determine all other matters concerning the scholarship, including advertising, application procedures and the method and time of payment.
